Headache Q & A

Can headaches be serious?

Headaches are common. Most everyone gets a headache at some time in their life. The pain is usually mild and localized, diminishing in time. If a headache is chronic, recurring, or causes intense pain that is debilitating, it can be the sign of something serious. The two major types of headaches are:

Migraines - can cause nausea and sensitivity to light and sound and are common symptoms.

Tension headaches - pain on both sides of the head that may be associated with muscle pain.

Both of these types of headaches can be more than just annoying. They can interfere with daily activities and quality of life, such as vision and bodily functions. They can cause pain and sensation elsewhere in the body and even contribute to mood and personality changes.

What can a doctor of chiropractic do?

A chiropractor’s main goal is correcting the neuromusculoskeletal source of your headache. This can involve spinal manipulations to realign the spine, a major contributor to headaches. Dr. Bai offers a variety of treatment options for patients suffering from headaches. First, an observation and exam are done to determine the best source of care. From there, Dr. Bai may employ one or more of the following to treat you for chronic headache pain:

Spinal manipulation - chiropractic adjustments are used to improve and realign the spine, improve spinal function, and alleviate the stress on your system responsible for creating tension in the neck and head.

Provide nutritional advice and education – sometimes a deficiency in vitamins and minerals can cause headaches to occur.

Corrective exercises – proper posture, exercises, and relaxation techniques can aid in relieving any recurring joint irritation or tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.

Every patient is an individual case and as such treatment will vary based on specific needs.

What if I don’t have a headache when I come in?

Just like a car doesn’t always make the same noise when you bring it to a mechanic, also a pain does not always show up when it is time to visit the chiropractor. This does not mean, however, that the underlying issue has been addressed. Because there are many causes for headaches of varying degrees, they will often return if the problem is not addressed. Repeat visits are recommended to help retrain and strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and head.
